Above-Ground vs. Buried Propane Tanks: Which Is Right for Your Property?

It’s one of the first questions in every propane project: above ground or buried? Both are safe, code-approved options when installed correctly. The right answer depends on your property, your budget, and your priorities — here’s how we walk customers through it.

Above-ground tanks

The straightforward option: the tank sits on a pad, visible and accessible. Installation is simpler and less expensive — no excavation, faster timeline. Service and inspection are easy because everything is reachable. The trade-offs: you see the tank (though placement and landscaping can do a lot), and in Florida, code requires proper anchoring so it stays put in hurricane winds.

Underground tanks

Buried tanks disappear — only a small dome lid shows above the lawn. For luxury properties and tight lots, that invisibility is worth a lot. Underground tanks are also naturally sheltered from storms and sun. The trade-offs: excavation adds cost and time; the tank must be engineered for burial with corrosion protection; and — critically in Florida — it must be properly anchored, because our high water table exerts real buoyant force on a buried vessel. This is exactly the kind of detail that separates licensed, experienced installers from the rest.
